I'll Be Your Masseuse Tonight...

From The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp, MD (a book full of otherwise good advice):

“It’s easier to establish a schedule if you follow the same pattern every day. After your baby is a month old, start this reassuring nighttime routine:

low lights
toasty bath
loving massage with heated oil
some warm milk
cozy swaddle
a lullaby..softly sung
and
gentle white noise playing in the background”

I would expect a big tip after all that. Does this sound nuts to everyone else, too? Heated oil!? He forgot to add, “Lay prostrate on the ground and then bow deeply as you back slowly out of the room.” Sheesh.

59 days until baby.

  1. Are you sure you're reading the right book?

All kidding aside, I think a lot of pediatricians will tell you NOT to bathe your baby every night. It dries their skin. Once I realized that a lot of baby "advice" is sponsored by companies that make products for the bath (and...umm...massage), I stopped paying attention!

  2. I did all of that, with the exception of the oil, but, believe me, it didn't seem as relaxing as that sounds.
