Dinner Music

Last night, as I fed Violet her dinner, Linda made ours and the rain fell outside. A song played in the background, the words so appropriate, I had to put them down here as a snapshot of one fall evening. I know they weren’t composed with familial love in mind, but for one night and the memory of it, that’s how I choose to hear it:

The stream can't contain such the withering rain,
And from the pasture the fence it is leaning away
The clouds crack and growl
Like some great cat on the prowl
Crying out, "I am, I am" over and over again

The days grow short
As the nights grow long
The kettle sings it's tortured song
A many petalled kiss I place upon her brow,
Oh, my lady, lady I am loving you now

And though all these things will change,
The memories will remain
As green to gold, and gold to brown
The leaves will fall to feed the ground
And in their falling, make no sound
Oh my lady, lady I am loving you now

  1. Is that a COOKIE? And wow, no bib! Impressive.

FYI, keep your eyes on that sippy cup. If you forget to clean it like once, the whole thing gets moldy. At least that was our experience. We switched brands pretty quickly. I liked how sturdy that one was, but keeping up with keeping it clean and dry was too much.

  2. Amy - it is a cookie, but it's a plastic one from her Cookie Monster toy. She could care less about cookie monster, but she loves those cookies. And all the bibs are in the laundry, so we had to go commando.

And thanks for the heads up on the mold! Did you have the same kind of sippy cup?

  3. We used those for a few months, then switched to the Nuby kind with the removable clear top. They are not as sturdy as the ones in your picture, but they're easier to wash and don't get moldy. And, when Macie would chomp on the sippy part a few too many times, we'd just replace the clear top part. (You can buy replacements online.)

We use sippy cups water only. We use straw cups or actual glasses for milk. Straw cups are a pain in the butt to clean, but they're not horrible, and you can also get replacement straws online once they get chewed on too much. Our pediatrician recommended them for anything other than water because it keeps the liquid from washing over the teeth. My sister-in-law the speech therapist recommended them because they are better for...I can't remember. Something about mouth positioning and word pronunciation. It took a while for Macie to get the hang of them, but now she can use a straw with no trouble at all.

  4. Hey, thanks! We'll definitely look into the Nuby kind. With the straw cup - how old was Macie when you started her on it? You think ten months is too early to try?

  5. I think she was maybe 13 months, but give it a try! It will take a while for her to get it, but she will eventually.
